The village of Peitz

(Picnjo)

The Ironworks and Fisheries Museum provides an insight into the history of the fortified town of Peitz. The long tradition of fishing is also explained here, as fish farming has been practised in Peitz for centuries. You will certainly be familiar with the Peitz carp, which is known and loved far beyond the town's borders.

With an area of 1,000 hectares, the Peitz ponds are an important centre of the fishing industry and one of the largest contiguous pond areas in Germany. Thus, it is of valuable ecological importance, as important breeding grounds for rare water bird species are located here.

Sights & Activities in Peitz

You should definitely visit the ironworks and fishing museum. Located directly on the Peitz ponds, it provides exciting insights into the long-standing fishing tradition, the former iron production and the industrial history of the town of Peitz. The history of the old fortified town of Peitz is also interesting. The fortress tower in the historic old town centre is not only the town's landmark but also its oldest building and today houses a multimedia exhibition on the town's history. On a guided tour of the town by a guide dressed as a Prussian soldier, you can get to know the old town with its historic town hall, church and Malzhausbastei.

Excursion destinations in the surrounding area

A popular destination in the Peitzer Land is the Teichland adventure park with a summer toboggan run, maze, mini-golf course and more. The local history museums in Jänschwalde, Drachhausen and Tauer tell about the traditions and customs of the Sorbs/Wends. There is plenty of sand in the east of the Peitzer Land, where the Jänschwalde open-cast mine extends. The "Green Heart", a renaturation area, is developing directly on the tip, with near-natural forest and native wild plants. In the villages of Grötsch and Grießen, lookout points provide a sweeping view of the vast (opencast) landscape. All excursion destinations are very easy to reach by bike and offer varied routes.
