Federal Competition 2022/23: Sustainable Tourism Destinations in Germany

Vetschau, 08 December 2022

The Spreewald Tourism Association announced today that it has been admitted to the second application phase in the 2022/23 federal competition for sustainable tourism destinations in Germany. The competition is organised jointly by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and the German Tourism Association and addresses small towns, established regions and city destinations alike to promote sustainable tourism development.

"Becoming a sustainable tourism destination is one of our core goals," says Annette Ernst, head of the Spreewald Tourism Association. "We want to bring locals and guests closer to the landscape and culture of the Spreewald with its regional characteristics and specialities, and at the same time raise awareness for the preservation of these existential values. The federal competition helps us to realise this goal in a focused way."

A total of 42 applications have made it to the next stage. The second application phase will begin in January 2023. "Here we will present a lighthouse project as well as a sustainable focus topic," explains Martin Libutzki, deputy head of Tourismusverband e.V. "In this phase, the partners that form the regional network, i.e. the UNE-SCO Spreewald Biosphere Reserve and the Spreewald Association, can and should be integrated and presented."

The Spreewald Tourism Association, together with its partners, is dedicated to the following strategic sustainability goals and is compiling measures for sustainable development: for example, the development and promotion of environmentally compatible mobility in the Spreewald or the active management of tourist flows, including the expansion of public transport with improved connections and frequencies.

The winners can win an attractive marketing and consultancy package, as well as benefit from the attention of the national competition in numerous communication media. There will also be extensive exchange and networking opportunities.
