The officially recognised spa town of Goyatz lies on the southern shore of Lake Schwieloch, the largest natural lake in Brandenburg.
With its bathing beaches, numerous watersports facilities and a well developed network of cycle and hiking trails, Goyatz has always been a popular holiday destination in the Upper Spreewald.
The most famous son of the region is Ludwig Leichhardt, who spent many years exploring Australia, and who grew up near Lake Schwieloch in the 19th century. He became a legend here due to his mysterious disappearance during another expedition to Australia.

Goyatz on Lake Schwieloch is a paradise for watersports fans and nature lovers. Sailing boats, rowing boats and motorboats can all be hired locally. Hikers and cyclists can follow the Leichhardt trail. Over a distance of 54 km, it leads from Trebatsch, where Ludwig Leichhardt was born, to Branitz near Cottbus, and it is marked with a black kangaroo on a yellow background. Legend has it that the young Leichhardt used to take this route often on foot. Visitors can find further information on the Leichhardt trail in the Tourist Information Office in Goyatz.
