The place Luckau

(Łukow)

In Luckau you will experience a historic town centre with gabled houses from the Baroque period. "Beautiful to conquer" - with this promise, Luckau invites its guests and residents to go on an exploration tour through the town, its historic town centre and surrounding area. Whether it's a stroll through the picturesque old town with the imposing Nikolai Church and the numerous, lavishly restored town houses. Or a walk through the parks of the pretty LAGA Park and thus the grounds of the former State Garden Show with beautifully planted beds according to the seasons. Kids can also enjoy themselves here on the water adventure playground or let their marbles roll on the artistic marble run. A camper van site invites you to spend the night at the idyllic park. It's a great starting point for individual excursions!

The town offers a variety of guided tours that can be experienced and booked all year round. Participants of the tours can, for example, "walk in Napoleon's footsteps through Luckau", immerse themselves in historic Luckau at night or experience "churches, monasteries, prisons" against the backdrop of the Reformation. The Luckau Culture Game - Beautiful to Conquer - offers the opportunity to actively go on a discovery tour through the city's history at any time and solve exciting puzzles. In addition to the culture game for adults, a children's version has also been developed, especially for the little city adventurers. On an excursion to the Heinz Sielmann Nature Experience Centre in Wanninchen, kids and adults have the same adventurous fun. Where coal used to be mined, the beautiful Sielmanns Nature Landscape Wannichen with forests, lakes and dunes has been created on more than three thousand hectares.

Places of interest in Luckau

In the centre of the old town, next to Baroque gabled houses, the hall church of St. Nikolai rises up and lures its visitors inside with the sounds of the richly decorated donor organ. The historic town centre is enclosed by a 1.8 km long, completely preserved town wall, which is well worth walking around.

The former Dominican monastery, which became a prison from the middle of the 18th century and whose most famous inmate was probably Karl Liebknecht, now houses the Niederlausitz Museum. There, a permanent exhibition presents the riches of Luckau as well as the history of the former prison from 1747 until its closure in 2005. In addition, there is now a church, the district archive, a day-care centre and flats there.

Activities in Luckau

The ensemble of the former monastery complex includes an indoor playground for the town's youngest guests, who can let off steam here on trampolines, ball pools and rainbow slides. In addition to the LAGA Park, themed gardens on the Schlossberg hill invite visitors to take long walks. The surrounding nature parks and lakes promise an idyllic setting for cycling and hiking tours in the Spreewald.

Events in Luckau

The season kicks off in April with the Tulip Festival in the LAGA Park. Also in April, the largest open-air fair in southern Brandenburg, the Niederlausitzer Leistungsschau, opens its doors. In June, the "Kultur-Herz Open-Air" attracts visitors to Luckau: top acts and regional artists get together. In July you can experience an unforgettable evening with the Luckau Barge Night - here artists play music from barges. For the Old Town Night in September, cellars, churches, courtyards and pubs open their doors for culture, live music and enjoyment. The following day, the Kartoffelbrunch (potato brunch) is held on the market square to mark the Open Monument Day. At the end of the year, the mulled wine mile and the Old Town Christmas are popular destinations.

Luckau is also the main player in the Dahme-Spreewald cultural triangle. The project, which is part of the "Cultural Anchor Points" programme, has been extending into the region as a network since 2022, starting from the three cornerstones of Luckau, Lieberose and Halbe. The aim is not only to strengthen the three cultural locations, but also to link cultural actors from different sectors with each other and with other areas of society such as tourism, business and politics.
